Chapter 1 — The Last March

The game opens in Lumières, a city shrouded in perpetual twilight. You are introduced to Gustave as he prepares Expedition 33 — the 33rd group of warriors sent to stop the Paintress before she erases those who have turned 33 years old.

Follow the tutorial prompts through the city streets. Pay attention to the parry timing tutorial — it introduces the visual cue system that governs every combat encounter in the game.

💡 Pro Tip

Loot every breakable container in Chapter 1. The Worn Compass hidden behind the fountain in the market district is required for a side quest in Chapter 4. Don't miss it!

Once you leave Lumières through the Painted Gate, you cannot return until much later in the game. Make sure you've explored everything before departing.

Chapter 2 — Into the Painted Wastes

Expedition 33 enters the Painted Wastes — a surreal landscape where reality and the Paintress's canvas blend. This is where the game opens up significantly, introducing the first open exploration zone.

Your primary objective is to reach the Ivory Spire, but the path is filled with dangerous Pictos — living painted creatures that serve as the main enemy faction throughout the game.

Combat System Deep Dive

Chapter 2 introduces the full combat system. Key mechanics to master:

  • Parry Window — A brief flash of white light signals a parryable attack. Perfect timing rewards you with a counterattack.
  • Dodge Roll — Red highlighted attacks cannot be parried and must be dodged. Learn to read the color difference.
  • AP Management — Save Action Points for burst turns. Spending all AP every turn is a trap for new players.
  • Weakness Exploit — Each enemy has elemental weaknesses. Exploiting them triggers a stagger for a free follow-up.
💡 Key Discovery

The abandoned artist's shack in the northwest corner of the Painted Wastes contains a Masterwork Palette — one of the best early-game accessories. It boosts all painted skill damage by 20%.

Ivory Spire — Mini Boss: The Warden of Lines

At the entrance to the Ivory Spire, you'll face your first real challenge: the Warden of Lines. This enemy introduces multi-phase combat.

  • Phase 1: Standard attacks, practice your parries here. The Warden is forgiving in this phase.
  • Phase 2 (below 50% HP): The Warden begins charging a powerful painted laser. Use Maelle's barrier ability immediately.
  • Recommended Party: Gustave (DPS), Maelle (barrier), Lune (healing)

Chapter 3 — Shattered Memories

Following the events at the Ivory Spire, the party discovers a fragmented village — people frozen mid-life, caught in the Paintress's incomplete strokes. This chapter is the most emotionally resonant of the early game.

You encounter Verso for the first time as a mysterious wanderer. He joins your party temporarily in this chapter and permanently after a key story choice in Chapter 5.

Story Choices in Chapter 3

Chapter 3 contains the game's first significant story branch:

  • Choice A — Destroy the painted village: Frees the frozen souls but eliminates a major side quest hub. Rewards Gustave-specific equipment.
  • Choice B — Preserve the village: Unlocks 6 additional side quests and reveals major lore about the Paintress's origins. Recommended for first playthrough.
💡 Recommendation

Choose Preserve the Village on your first playthrough. The lore revelations fundamentally change how you understand the final act. You can make the other choice on NG+.

Chapter 4 — The Brushwork Catacombs

The deepest and most complex dungeon in the first half of the game. The Brushwork Catacombs span three floors, filled with puzzle mechanics that use the painting system creatively.

Catacomb Puzzles Overview

  • Color Resonance Puzzles: Match the painted color of a switch to the color in your inventory palette. Lune's analysis skill reveals hidden colors.
  • Shadow Tracing: Cast the correct shadow by positioning your character relative to light sources to unlock sealed doors.
  • Memory Echoes: Interact with ghostly imprints of past expedition members to unlock lore rooms containing powerful equipment.
⚠️ Don't Miss

The Expedition 17 Journal on Floor 2 is a missable key item. It reveals a shocking connection between the Paintress and a previous expedition leader. This item is required for the "Echoes of the Past" achievement.

Chapter 5 — The Artist's Eye

A turning point in the narrative. The party reaches the edge of the known painted world and glimpses the true scope of the Paintress's canvas. This chapter contains some of the most visually stunning sequences in the game.

Verso officially joins the party in this chapter. His unique Shadow Step ability makes previously inaccessible areas in Chapters 1-4 reachable — backtracking is heavily rewarded.

Verso's Unique Exploration Abilities

  • Shadow Step — Pass through painted barriers (purple outline)
  • Echo Read — Reveal hidden messages left by previous expeditions
  • Dark Trace — Follow invisible paths in areas with heavy fog

Chapter 6 — Before the Canvas

The penultimate chapter. After the shocking revelations of Chapter 5, the party prepares for the final confrontation with the Paintress. This chapter serves as both a gear-up phase and an emotional conclusion for each party member's personal arc.

Pre-Final Boss Checklist

  • ✅ Complete all party member side quests (unlocks powerful ultimate abilities)
  • ✅ Collect all 7 Chromatic Essences (crafts the most powerful armor set)
  • ✅ Defeat all optional Phantom Bosses (required for true ending)
  • ✅ Purchase at least 10 Hi-Restores from the traveling merchant
  • ✅ Ensure all party members are at least Level 28

Chapter 7 — The Paintress

The final chapter. Once you enter the Paintress's Sanctum, there is no turning back. The final dungeon is a breathtaking artistic achievement — a living painting that shifts and evolves as you progress.

💡 True Ending Requirement

To unlock the true ending, you must have: completed all party side quests, collected all 7 Chromatic Essences, AND defeated all 4 Phantom Bosses before entering the Sanctum. If you missed any, you'll get the standard ending.

Post-Game Content

After completing the main story, a New Game+ mode unlocks with the following bonuses:

  • All character levels and equipment carry over
  • New Paintress difficulty unlocked (hardest mode)
  • Additional lore items only available in NG+
  • Alternate story choices from your previous playthrough are highlighted
