Party Overview
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 features a flexible party system where you choose three of the available characters for each combat encounter. Understanding each character's strengths and the synergies between them is critical for late-game success.
Your active party can be swapped freely between battles. Different bosses favor different compositions — don't get attached to a single setup.
Gustave
⚔️ Leader / Physical DPS
The heart of Expedition 33. Gustave excels in sustained physical damage and crowd control, making him the reliable backbone of almost any party composition.
Base Stats (Level 30)
Best Build — "Blade Tempest" (Recommended)
Focuses on maximizing physical damage output through stacking critical hit chance and multi-hit abilities.
- Primary Skills: Ironclad Cleave, Surge Strike, Blade Tempest (ultimate)
- Passive: Combat Flow (each parry increases next attack damage by 15%)
- Equipment: Painted Warblade + Expedition Plate + Counterattacker's Ring
- Stat Priority: ATK → CRIT → SPD
Best Build — "Guardian Wall" (Tanky)
Sacrifice some damage output for party protection. Excellent for beginners and hard bosses.
- Primary Skills: Iron Fortress, Rallying Cry, Provoke
- Passive: Enduring Heart (parry recovers 5% HP)
- Equipment: Bulwark Shield + Ironclad Armor + Guardian's Talisman
- Stat Priority: DEF → HP → ATK
Gustave's parry counterattacks are surprisingly powerful. Build the "Blade Tempest" spec and intentionally parry regularly — each successful parry stacks Combat Flow, potentially tripling your damage output during a burst turn.
Maelle
🔮 Elemental Mage / Versatile
Gustave's sister and the most versatile character in the game. Maelle can fill DPS, support, or hybrid roles depending on her build, making her almost mandatory in most endgame compositions.
Base Stats (Level 30)
Best Build — "Chromatic Burst" (Pure Magic DPS)
- Primary Skills: Prismatic Arrow, Paint Explosion, Chromatic Nova (ultimate)
- Passive: Painted Affinity (elemental skills cost 1 less AP)
- Equipment: Paintress's Wand + Scholar's Robe + Resonance Crystal
- Stat Priority: MAG → SPD → MP
Best Build — "Painted Shield" (Hybrid Support)
- Primary Skills: Barrier of Light, Arcane Mend, Painted Prison (CC)
- Passive: Empathic Link (barrier also applies to adjacent ally)
- Equipment: Support Staff + Warden's Coat + Mana Crystal x2
- Stat Priority: MAG → SPD → DEF
Lune
✨ Light Healer / Buffer
A mysterious scholar of light magic who joined Expedition 33 for her own reasons. Lune is the premier healer and buffer, essential for prolonged fights against powerful bosses.
Base Stats (Level 30)
Best Build — "Radiant Dawn" (Full Healer)
- Primary Skills: Healing Light, Revive Blessing, Radiant Pulse (AoE heal)
- Passive: Overflowing Light (excess healing converts to a shield)
- Equipment: Crystal Staff + Luminous Gown + Healer's Pendant
- Stat Priority: MAG → SPD → HP
Verso
🗡️ Shadow Rogue / Assassin
The mystery man of the expedition. Verso's hidden past is slowly revealed through his unique side quests. His combat style revolves around stealth, burst damage, and exploiting enemy weaknesses.
Base Stats (Level 30)
Best Build — "Shadow Predator" (Burst DPS)
- Primary Skills: Shadow Strike, Void Slash, Eclipse (ultimate — deals 800% damage after 3 shadow stacks)
- Passive: Predator's Eye (first attack on a full-HP enemy is always a critical)
- Equipment: Twin Shadow Daggers + Nightcloak + Assassin's Seal
- Stat Priority: CRIT → SPD → ATK
Verso shines when enemies are introduced fresh to battle. Rotate him in after Gustave or Maelle softens targets, then use Eclipse for massive burst damage. Pair with Lune's "Vulnerability" debuff to push Eclipse damage even higher.
Best Party Compositions
There's no single "best" party for all situations, but these three compositions cover the most ground:
🏆 All-Around Best: Gustave + Maelle + Lune
The classic balanced trio. Gustave deals physical damage and tanks hits, Maelle provides elemental DPS and barriers, and Lune keeps everyone alive. This party can handle 90% of the game's content.
⚡ Speed Nuke: Maelle + Verso + Lune
The fastest party in the game. Maelle weakens enemies with elemental damage, Verso exploits those weaknesses for massive crits, and Lune buffs the team's speed. One of the best setups for the final boss.
🛡️ Hard Mode / Beginners: Gustave + Verso + Lune
Gustave tanks and sustains, Verso bursts, and Lune heals. This party is slower but very forgiving of mistakes — recommended if you're new to the parry system.
